The Historic Deadwood-Lead Arts Council and the Deadwood Historic Preservation Commission announced today the opening of a visual arts contest themed around Black Hills legends Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane.
Art may be submitted in one of five categories: oil, acrylic, watercolor and airbrush; pen and ink or colored pencil; computer or digital art; photography; and sculpture. Eligible artwork should reflect the artist's concept of Wild Bill, Calamity Jane or both.
The entry fee is $10 for adults and $5 for students. Deadline for submissions is September 1. Entries will be judged September 3-5, and the top two submissions in each category will receive cash prizes. Winning artwork will also be displayed in prominent Deadwood locations September 5-30; other submissions will be displayed at the HDLAC Arts Center at 306 West Main Street, Lead.
Entries may be delivered to the HDLAC Arts Center or mailed to PO Box 595, Lead, SD 57754. Entrants must include their name, address, valid phone number or e-mail address, check or money order for the full entry fee, return postage if artwork is to be shipped back to the artist and a letter granting HDLAC and DHPC permission to publish the work with credit to you as the artist.
